The word Crap I found out the other day is a very old English word that means outcrop of stone, a piece of stone that juts beyond another,
an overhanging of stone. Nothing to do with Thomas Crapper who is widely acclaimed as the inventor of the flushing toilet but again NO, the flushing toilet was actually invented by John Harrington in 1596.
So now imagine my surprise to find out Crap didn't mean Shit. Further to my surprise I find that Shit didn't mean what I thought either. shit is actually the initials of a saying used in wooden hulled sailing craft originally in the early 1400s, it means Store High In Transit this was because the ships took in water that bathed the lower cargo holds and valuable items that were ruined if wet needed to be stored out of reach of the water hence S.H.I.T was stenciled to the cartons of anything that needed to be kept dry.
Hence the sailors used to say " What shit are we carrying " or " where is this shit going " Captains and Shipping merchants would charge more for SHIT because it needed special handling making another popular saying " Be careful with that Shit it's expensive " So if anyone ask's you now you really know what your shit's about ? nftw

Very interesting topic since the origin of phrases, words and even alphabet in general can be deeply rooted in other different things, as well as stemmed from it such as different cultures, language.. etc. Great topic @Teradon, keep posting more and #NiNFTW

FUBAR - f***ed up beyond all recognition

yep, the initial safety on a nuclear pile was a graphite rod hung from the ceiling by a rope, which was cut to drop it into the pile and stop a run away reaction

Well the meaning at one time could be quite literal it refers to someone being extra quiet or at a loss for words, well one source for this was that at one time if you where a Liar, or a Blasphemer your tongue would be cut out and fed to the cats.

To Spill the beans : Meaning to disclose a secret .
In Ancient Greece beans were used to vote for candidates in the Sennett , a jar was placed on a table and each voter would vote for the law or person they were voting for by placing a white or a black bean depending how they voted.
If some careless person knocked over the jar whilst voting it was regarded as a void vote because the beans could be seen and the secret vote ruined , hence disclosing the amount of white or black beans in the jar hence Spilling the beans . nftw
